ASCENT – Health & Well-being Project

As of April 2021 Bradby’s existing specialist services (substance misuse, safer relationships and targeted support) were aligned, coming together to create a single project for supporting young people across a range of issues. ASCENT, is Bradby Club’s specialist Health and Well-being support service incorporating a number of professionals to meet young people’s complex needs.

ASCENT will:

  • Broaden spectrum of support and education
  • Enable more effective overlap of Bradby professionals
  • Create a single streamlined support service for young people and youth provisions
  • Benefit from multi-disciplinary team input
  • Improve overall outcomes for young people

The work we do:

  • Youth Club Sessions
This service and the club will continue to offer open access, supportive youth work, built on the development of sustained relationships and the well-being of the whole person. The interaction through evening sessions at the club with more specialised project work is still crucial in engaging and positively impacting young people’s futures.
  • Bradby Young Carers Group
Aimed specifically at young carers across Rugby. This group provides targeted learning and recreational opportunities and activities for young carers to have some respite, meet with friends and enjoy some time of their own in a place of their own.
  • 121 Support and Mentoring
ASCENT will have a heavy focus on 121 support as this is where we are able to encourage most change from young people. Young people are identified through the open access youth sessions or referred from other agencies. 121’s and mentoring take many forms depending on the young person, the issues affecting them and the desired outcomes. Boxing, sport, cooking, arts or just conversation are a few of the tools incorporated into the sessions to make an impact.
  • Group Work
Group work sessions around current issues is delivered as part of ASCENT To target behaviours and issues across young people’s peers and friends.
  • Drop-in Sessions
Drop-in sessions / Sex, Drugs and Sausage Rolls will continue to be delivered within schools and local youth provisions when it is possible to do so.
  • Workshops
Workshops are delivered within schools and youth provisions covering a wide range of topics to empower and educate young people. Topics include:
    • Drug and Alcohol Awareness
    • Relationships and Sexual Health
    • Consent

Substance misuse case study

Alex was 16 when he first accessed the service he was referred to Bradby Club young person’s substance misuse service by another youth club in town due problematic Cannabis misuse. Alex’s relationships at home were breaking down and he begun to steal to fund his habit. Things escalated at home and his parents decided he needed to leave to get his act together due to his parents’ concerns on the impact on younger siblings.

The Bradby Club supported him into young persons supported accommodation. He had one to one mentoring support with the substance misuse worker and targets were set and he was encouraged to get involved in the club as he had a strong interest in music, he also went on a number of residential trips that involved outdoor challenges which incorporated leadership and team work skills.

Through the support and positive activities his Cannabis use gradually reduced and eventually stopped. The positive activities and the support of the staff at Bradby club allowed Alex to understand the consequences and the negative impact that his substance misuse was having on his life. The support was frequently some weeks he was here every day and The Bradby Club offered a safe place for him to change and develop and rebuild the relationships with his parents.

During this time he became a volunteer at the club teaching music to the young people, he also moved back home and enrolled into college studying performing arts and is currently studying for degree at University.
